Au début des années 90, la scène musicale a commencé à s'animer de nouvelles tendances. Un nouvel engouement appelé drum circles a commencé à faire la une des journaux, à peu près au même moment où un nouveau son latin appelé "Afro-Cuban" faisait son entrée dans les charts pop avec le hit "Conga" de la Miami Sound Machine. Le tambour à main recevait une grande quantité de presse alors que de plus en plus de gens ont commencé à utiliser le tambour à main comme passe-temps récréatif. Les gens voulaient jouer du tambour pour diverses raisons de santé et de bien-être, ainsi que pour le pur plaisir. Pendant tout ce temps, le son latin est devenu plus populaire et plus courant.
